Michael Lowell Sims

Michael Lowell Sims was born on September 20th, 1958, in the small-town of Waycross, Georgia to Wilbur Charles Sims, Sr. and Michealane Mariah Sims-Lightbourn. Michael graduated from Noland Senior High in Miami, FL in 1976, where he was a football, basketball, and track star. After high school graduation, Michael proceeded to obtain higher education at Tulane University on an athletic scholarship for football. While at Tulane, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health as well as a Master of Art in Liberal Arts. In 1990, he married the love of his life, Paulette Sims, and went on to father seven children who were his pride and joy. Michael had a sincere passion for helping and serving others. As proof of his passion, he served 26 years in education as a teacher, athletic director, coach, and principal. Michael also served as a top executive at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for 17 years. Michael was a hardworking man, devoted father, and loving husband with the special gift to master anything he took on. Michael's love for others was immeasurable, and he never hesitated to give to those he loved or a stranger in need. His character was one of a kind and he was so full of life. There was seldom a time where he wasn't cracking a joke or singing and dancing. He was analytical and highly articulate. The kind of man who truly took the time to listen to others before speaking himself. He was a quiet force, but when he did speak, everyone listened because they knew the value of his words. Michael was wise beyond his years and always knew just what to say, no matter what the situation was. Punctuality and dependability were also two of Michael's core characteristics. If ever he was presented with a problem, he immediately knew the steps to solve it and acted accordingly. His priorities were clear, his approach was unshakeable, and his exceptional character was a model that made everyone who knew him better. On the evening of August 23, 2021, at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, LA, Michael, 62, left this earth for his eternal home in Heaven. Whether Michael was a coach, principal, father, friend, husband, grandfather, or even a stranger making casual talk in an elevator, he touched the lives of all with his generosity and passion for life. Michael was one of a kind and will truly be missed. Michael Sims is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Paulette; his six daughters, Nicole, Bria, Alliyah, Meah, Nakeah and Teah; his son, Jamar Roberts; eight grandchildren; his mother, Michaelane Mariah Sims-Lightbourn; sister, Jeannene Rosser; and a cousin, Larry Williams. He was preceded in death by his father, Wilbur Charles Sims Sr.; elder brother, Wilbur Charles Sims II; and his aunt, Bettye Smith. Friends and family are invited to Michael's Celebration of Life on September 11, 2021 at Cross Memorial Funeral Home, 60100 West Way Drive, Amite, Louisiana 70422. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM until the time of the funeral service beginning at 12:00PM. Pastor John Armstrong, officiating. Graveside service will be held privately. Cross Memorial Funeral Home, Amite, LA are in charge of arrangements.
